Vancouver in black and white by a master of colour

The city that Fred Herzog documented for more than half a century is gone. An urban flâneur before his time, Herzog roamed the streets of Vancouver, creating archival documents that capture the essence of a bygone era. Now considered one of the most important street photographers of the 20th century, Fred Herzog shattered the codes of young colour photography. However, it was not until the late 1950s that he decided to use mainly Kodachrome colour slides. "Fred Herzog: Black and White" highlights a lesser-known side of this outstanding photographer. Appearing as a companion piece to the seminal work "Modern Color", it includes urban scenes playing with light and shadow, as well as travel photographs and depictions of rural life. Evoking notions of melancholy, this book reveals that Herzog's strength lies in his ability to capture a form of psychological state in each image in a condensed manner. psychologique.
